MELT Scholars at Appalachian

The Appalachian State University MELT Scholars program is funded by the Gordon and Mary Cain Foundation and coordinated through the ASU Department of Mathematical Sciences and its Mathematics Education Leadership Training (MELT) program. Additional Support comes from the Texas Instruments Teachers Teaching with Technology Program.

The goal of the MELT Scholars Program is to develop high school mathematics teachers as leaders, both through their innovative work in the classroom and as in-service workshop instructors.   MELT scholars will be resources to their students and to other mathematics teachers.  

Successful applicants will receive funding for professional development and 12 semester hours of credit in the graduate program in mathematics, secondary education at Appalachian. Professional development will take the form of participation in four week-long MELT Summer Institutes during June and July 2006 as well as four two-day follow-up workshops during the 2006-2007 school year. Scholars will choose from the institutes listed below, and will receive room, board, technology and in-state tuition remission.

Week 1 (18-22 June 2007 ): Advanced Functions and Modeling

Week 2 (25- 29 June,   2007): Statistics 2

Week 3 (9-13 July 2006): Technical Mathematics

Week 4 (16-20 July 2006)Discrete Mathematics

Scholars will also receive travel allowances, room, board and in-state tuition remission for the four follow-up workshops during the academic year.   Please type or print clearly.   Mail the completed form and direct two letters of support to:

MELT scholar applicants must also apply to the MA program in mathematics, secondary education at Appalachian.
