These weeklong MELT Institutes are open to all high school and two-year college mathematics faculty .  In addition, Integrating Middle School Mathematics is a newly developed course specifically designed to meet the needs of middle school mathematics teachers . Two Institutes, Teaching Advanced Functions & Modeling and Teaching Geometry , are part of North Carolina's Statewide Institutes for Teaching Excellence (SITE) Program and are designed to address content knowledge in conjunction with appropriate and tested pedagogical and assessment strategies. Three other institutes, Teaching Integrated Mathematics , Teaching Algebra , and Teaching Discrete Mathematics , are being rewritten to align with the proposed North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCS) in order to help teachers prepare to better implement the Standard Course of Study. Exploring Mathematics with the TI- nspire will provide teachers with an appropriate background for implementing the newest generation of hand-held technology in their classrooms. Purposeful Pedagogy and Analyzing Teaching is an experimental institute combining formal Japanese Lesson Study with an array of pedagogical approaches designed to make mathematics teaching more purposeful and meaningful to students. Part of this institute will include modeling teaching and learning with high school mathematics students who are participating with Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics and in Appalachian State University's summer Math Camp . All Institutes will consist of the finest professional development available.

The per-week institute fee is $330 per participant. For this institute fee, each participant will receive instruction, curriculum materials, supplies, parking, a tee shirt, daily snacks, and lunches. Housing on campus with a full meal plan is available. For each institute, participants may elect either 30 clock hours of renewal credit (3 CEUs) or, for an additional fee, credit for a two semester-hour graduate mathematics course.

Financial assistance may be available to qualified applicants. Contact us to see if it is available for you.

These workshops are ideal for teachers interested in preparing to implement the new North Carolina Standard Course of Study in Secondary Mathematics in a meaningful way.
